Every 17 March, the world collectively decides that green is not just a colour. It’s a personality.
There are parades. There are shamrocks. There are leprechaun hats that should probably come with a warning label. And yes… There are enthusiastic toasts that may or may not lead to next-day regret.
But before the shenanigans, there was history. So let’s follow the rainbow back to its roots.
The Man Behind the Myth
St Patrick wasn’t actually Irish (plot twist). He was born in Roman Britain in the late 4th century. As a teenager, he was kidnapped and taken to Ireland as a slave. After escaping years later, he eventually returned, voluntarily, as a missionary.
Legend says he used the three-leafed shamrock to explain the concept of the Trinity. Whether fact or folklore, the shamrock became a powerful symbol of Irish faith, resilience, and identity.
Originally, St Patrick’s Day was a quiet religious feast day. Reflective, communal, rooted. Pubs were even closed in Ireland on 17 March until the 1970s.
Yes. Closed. Let that sink in.
The big parades and green-everything energy really took off when Irish diaspora communities (especially in the United States) turned it into a proud celebration of cultural identity.
In other words, what started as sacred became social. And somewhere along the way, “celebration” became synonymous with “overindulgence”. But what if we brought it back to something more grounded?
Why We Wear Green (Besides Avoiding Pinches)
Green represents spring, renewal, growth, fertility, and life. Ireland’s nickname, “The Emerald Isle”, reflects its lush landscape.
But symbolically, green is about new beginnings. Fresh starts.
Growth that happens quietly beneath the soil before it ever becomes visible.
And if we’re talking plant symbolism… we’d be remiss not to gently nod toward another green plant that has travelled its own winding historical path.
Cannabis has also moved through phases of sacred use, prohibition, misunderstanding, and modern re-evaluation. Much like the shamrock, it has been mythologised, politicised, and reclaimed.
The difference? One gets pinned to your shirt. The other gets a compliance check.
At Cannamart, we believe in celebrating green responsibly, legally, intentionally, and without losing the plot (or the pot).

Because true plant wisdom isn’t about getting “lucky”. It’s about being informed.
